Applications for Boston School Committee Requested

The term of one member will expire in January

The School Committee Nominating Panel has begun the process of soliciting nominations for the sole position that will expire on January 2, 2017.  The position is held by Michael O’Neill who currently serves as Chair and has been a Member since 2008.  Mr. O’Neill is eligible to apply for a new four-year term, but currently it is unknown whether he will reapply.  This year the Panel is required to submit its recommendations to the Mayor no later than December 5, 2016.  The Mayor must make his appointment no later than January 2, 2017.

Serving on the School Committee provides the opportunity to make a difference in the lives and education of thousands of students in the Boston Public Schools.

Application Requirements
Applicants must be residents of Boston, and the application asks for basic information about the candidate and written responses to a series of questions. Interested applicants can download the application form here or request a form by emailing scnominatingpanel@boston.gov  Applications must be received by 5:00 P.M on Monday, November 14, 2016.

Nominating Panel
The Nominating Panel is composed of thirteen members with nine being designees of parent organizations, school unions, the business community, a college or university president and the Commissioner of Education.  The remaining four members are appointed by the Mayor.  This year the Nominating Panel must submit at least three names but no more than five names for the expiring seat and the Mayor must select one of the individuals from that group.

Boston School Committee
The Boston School Committee consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor.  To date six members of the Committee have been appointed or reappointed by Mayor Walsh.  Members of the Boston School Committee are appointed by the Mayor to serve a four year staggered term.

The appointed Committee makes the Mayor accountable for the performance of the Boston Public Schools.  The Mayor is expected to appoint highly qualified individuals who reflect the City’s racial diversity and bring appropriate experiences.
